I had such an amazing day on the water yesterday afternoon that I have to share!

My boss brought a special guest with him, so I was feeling a bit of pressure to produce some fish. Some of you may remember that I was lucky enough to take Derek Trucks out fishing a few years back, and that was a very enjoyable experience. But fishing with Roger yesterday is certainly one of the highlights of my career as a professional boat captain. Anyone recognize this guy?

Holy shit Cliff! That is awesome. Riger Watters is one of my all-time favorites. I can't imagine the conversations that you might have had with him. Did you discuss the dead with him at all? What a f'n memory that you have to keep, Trucks and now Watters. Pretty dam cool!

That fish is not so big, so I don't get what's the big deal? What is that guy with that hat on smiling at? Wait a freaking minute, wholly Shiite Muslim. The only bass player in the world to have made this any cooler (if that is possible) would have to have been the man himself, the honorable Mr.Phillip Lesh. Super cool Dennis, hope you didn't' pull a Chris Farley/Paul McCartney. Peace

Cliff -

Excellent. They really are "real" people aren't they.

Still, I appreciate your maintaining an even keel and keeping it professional - I would no doubt be mortified to hear a recording of whatever it was I babbled incoherently to Del McCoury this summer backstage at FloydFest.

The pic with Derek Trucks is also very nice - I think you had posted that earlier?

Good on ya.....

nice catch! hard to tell who it is with the hat and sunglasses. could it possibly be a grungy looking roger waters? saying it's one of your career highlights as a cap'n, i'm thinking it has to be someone of his caliber.

btw is trucks as laid back as he comes across on stage and in interviews?

Derek was the same on the boat as he seems on stage. He is so stoic while performing and both he and Mike Mattison were very laid back while we were fishing.

I was not surprised by Derek's angling skills. He has amazing hands and brought the same efficiency to fishing that he uses playing the guitar...

very cool stuff cliff. i'm quite envious as i'm sure we all are. i'm not surprised by derek's angling abilities either. those hands were manufactured by god himself. and i've heard roger is very proficient at fly fishing.

thanks for sharing your stories!

I think that's you on the left, with two very big fish.

Enlighten us, Cliff. I'm so horrible with faces that if I were sitting in a restaurant next to Phil and Bob I'd be thinking, "funny, those guys kinda look like Phil and Bob." So a guy with dark glasses, a hat, and a big smile behind a fish ... um, I gather he's a Roger. I googled Waters and Daltry for current pics. Looks more Watery, but what do I know.

Anyway, don't leave us hanging! Stories, please! Which Roger? What's he like? What did he think of your boatload of Dead? You lucky guy. It sounds amazing.

And congrats on getting the big rock fish that really big sea fish. I don't recognize it, either -- I thought salmon, because I'm clueless, or possibly a baby whale* -- but it would sure make a lot of sushi. The two humans look very happy.

* This is the mandatory humor footnote for anyone who might take this seriously and think that Cliff goes after whales. Although I understand that Waters is pro-fox hunting, so he probably wouldn't fit in on the Sea Shepherd. If it's THAT Roger.

The interaction and discussion that I shared with Roger was pretty much limited to fishing instructions. My boss is very prominant in the global financial world and has many high profile clients like Roger Waters and the Dutchess of Kent, etc. He would not have approved of my fawning over one of his guests, particularly one as private as Roger. I am very professional in how I approach my job, so I stuck to business.

Roger was very nice to me and he even teased me a couple of times because I'm so serious on the boat. As that photo was taken, he joked that I was getting him slimy by holding the fish too close to him in my zealousness to capture that moment.

Roger is a pretty good angler too. We were fishing off Montauk with live eels on 8/0 Gamagatsu live-bait circle hooks, and Roger did not miss a single hook up all afternoon. We ended taking four Striped Bass between 30 and 40 pounds, releasing several others. A day of fishing that I will never forget...

So now you can say, quite accurately, that you taught Roger Waters a thing or two about bass. (You will also be able to hear variations on that bad joke for years.) What a neat experience.

That's either a dead-on lookalike, a great Photoshop job or a very, very cool story. Congrats, Cliff! Looks like you got what you were looking for.

He looks pretty happy in the photo. Was he fun to hang out with? He seems like he'd be such a depressed grump.

Roger was quiet, but not grumpy at all. Just the opposite. We didnt chat much. My boss would not have approved if I asked Roger why he hasnt written anything good since The Wall. My job is to keep my clients safe and get them some fish. Roger good naturedly teased my serious disposition a couple of times, but look at his smile after he decked that forty pound Striper!

Well, DON'T tell him that Craven put me on to some ROIO. You know how Roger feels about that.

Meanwhile, in a moment of synchronicity: This morning Pandora played Roger's version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door": which I had never heard before.

Nice catches, Cliff.

Oh no, the vagina flower. For some reason my Dad felt it necessary for me to see The Wall when it came out. I was 13ish and it was a midnight movie. Sitting next to Dad in the interminable vagina flower scenes was uncomfortable at best. Like watching commercials (how 20th century) and a feminine hygiene product commercial came on the telly and just you and your mom were in the room. When will this 30 seconds be over. Oh no, it's a minute!

The light show seems incredible was it?

I really liked the guitar at the end of clip one. The rest isn't my cuppa tea. Meddle > Animals

Holy shit. The resurrected JG? You know what that would mean. The Spinners would be the new self proclaimed priest class. All the nah, nah, nah, hay, hay, your not saved, we were right self-righteousness.
They did have excellent Guatemalan clothing and accessories though. You win some, you lose some.

For those of you who didn't get to see The Wall (and for those that did and want to relive it), check out this link:

The Wall streaming

The quality is pretty damn impressive, especially if you download from the torrent site and burn it to DVD.

Yes, LSM is a classic. I'm grateful to have that one and several other soundboard quality recordings (BBC and Europa 1) from that era. Yet, they are too few. A common gripe for a GD and PF fan.

Once before we both mentioned our mutual fondness for this song. These are some favorites.

Geez, then, solve the mystery for those of us who'd make lousy papparazzi. Which hereabouts is probably just me. I recognized Ted Kennedy once. But it helped that someone said, "Look, there's Ted Kennedy." Ted Kennedy was the guy they were pointing to who looked a lot like Ted Kennedy. Celebrities have nothing to worry about from me.
